Chris Crawford defines interactivity as a cyclic process in which two actors alternately listen, think, and speak.
I think this is an appropriate definition, it is important for both parties (whether they be two people, or a person and a computer) to communicate back and forth.
I concur with your conclusion but I feel that the fact that his definition is based on having a conversation can get complicated when it's no longer about a conversation. It becomes all metaphorical and maybe there should be a bit of rewording to his definition.
RE TSquare: I get what you're saying Thomas, but I think this definition is totally appropriate. When you get into using more technical or specific terms it suggests interactivity in only computers, which is not the case. While computers are the most popular interactive media, they aren't the only one.
I agree that communication is vital to the whole process. But it is a bit vague to whether which qualifies as "communication." The definition requires a little more refining to what makes two people interact with each other. It can range from sign language to just croaking at each other.
Yes quite right, "ideas" is on the right path. It difficult to be precise about something has such a broad range of mediums. Sorry, if I wasn't clear enough in my response.

ReplyDeleteAh, you are right. It is important to make it clear that ideas have to transfer in this process. Is that what you meant?
